Rugby is the players game and we are a players' club. Formed in 1956 to provide rugby for youth players who could not get into existing local clubs, Abbey has never forgotten its roots. While we are nowadays fortunate to be a family club with three generations playing and helping to run the cub, we still place great emphasis on the quality of our rugby and the warmth of the welcome that we afford to guests, new members and especially new players.
Reading Abbey Rugby Club run 4 senior sides, a Colts (Under 19) team and a full Mini and Junior section. Our First XV compete in the South West 2 (East) League (national level 6). Reading Youth Rugby is the youth section of Reading Rugby Football Club and the new season activities start on Sunday 3rd September.
Reading Youth Rugby (RYR) has boys and girls teams at all age groups and welcomes new players from 6 to 17. All coaches are RFU qualified and CRB checked. The emphasis is on fun, safety and development. So if you fancy getting fit, improving your skills and being part of a great team come and join us on Sunday 3rd September @ 10.15 am @ Holme Park,
the home of the "Green Machine" or visit www.readingrfc.co.uk for more information. (Registration date for U14/U17 girls is Wednesday 23rd August). September taster sessions are free for new players. RYR Chair Diego Barrow said "The club welcomes players from all ages and genders aiming to promote enthusiasm, personal development and inclusive participation from the earliest possible age. All coaching is by qualified coaches who, although all volunteers, have received training and have been screened to make them suitable to work with young people. The club is accredited with the RFU ‘Stage I Seal of Approval’, is currently applying for Stage II and is working towards stage III. These awards are made to clubs that are able to demonstrate compliance with the RFUs criteria concerning playing programme, child protection, sports equity, ethics and governance."
