16/02/2012 to 24/03/2012 LETTICE AND LOVAGE THE WATERMILL - WEST BERKSHIRE PLAYHOUSE, NEWBURY The flamboyant Lettice Douffet decides to inject some theatricality into her role as tour guide in the least interesting stately home in England. She turns a minor incident on the staircase of Faustian House, involving Queen Elizabeth and the hem of her elaborate gown, into an epic romantic saga. Her captive audience is delighted, but Lotte Schoen, the straight-laced bureaucrat from the Preservation Trust, is unimpressed. She calls Lettice to her office and fires her. But the eccentric Lettice has made an impression and six months later, Lotte pays her an unexpected visit. Over a particularly potent Elizabethan cordial, the two women discover that they share a mutual hatred of the mediocre and of modern architecture and they form a touching alliance. A slight mishap during their re-enactment of the beheading of Charles I however, puts their friendship to the test! Watermill Theatre, Bagnor, Newbury RG20 8AE

13/03/2012 to 17/03/2012 THE BROWNING VERSION AND HARLEQUINADE KENTON THEATRE, HENLEY-ON-THAMES The Browning Version, Terence Rattigan’s one-act masterpiece, is about cruelty, kindness and the inescapability of self. Andrew Crocker-Harris is an embittered and disliked teacher of Greek and Latin at a British public school. He is being forced to retire on the pretext of ill health. His younger wife despises him for failing to achieve his early promise and compensates by having an affair with the science master. Andrew must come to terms with his failed life and attempt to regain his self-respect. Change and hope are found in unexpected places. Harlequinade, in contrast, is Rattigan’s affectionate and humorous view of a touring theatrical company staging Romeo and Juliet. Unfortunately the two leading stars are far too old to be playing such young characters and matters are thrown into confusion by the arrival of a young mother claiming to be the leading actor’s daughter. Deceived by authoritarian power, he is relentlessly hunted down for a crime that remains nameless. Finding himself arrested and awaiting trial, K sinks deeper and deeper as he tries to escape through twists and turns that are at once shocking, thrilling and funny. More than forty years after its first performance, Steven Berkoff’s brilliant adaptation of Franz Kafka’s masterpiece has become a classic work of twentieth century theatre and a widely studied syllabus piece. Kafka’s universal parable about the human condition is retold in Berkoff’s startlingly original, fresh and endlessly surprising play, which Blackeyed Theatre brings back to the stage in their inimitable way. 10/04/2012 to 14/04/2012 TRANSATLANTIC - A DOUBLE BILL PROGRESS THEATRE, READING A Gaggle of Saints by Neil Labute A young Mormon couple recount the events of an anniversary weekend in New York. As she tells of the glitz and the glamour of the celebration, his story reveals the secrets of his exploration of the darker side of the city. AND Handbagged by Moira Buffini For over a decade Margaret Thatcher met the Queen for a weekly audience. With all her previous Prime Ministers the Queen enjoyed a fairly informal relationship, but with Mrs Thatcher, things were different. Handbagged is an extremely witty look at what the relationship between these two very powerful and private women might have been like, including the influence of two key men: Ronald Reagan and Michael Shea. It provides a wonderful opportunity for four actresses to portray the two formidable women at different stages of their life. Progress Theatre, The Mount, Christchurch Road, Reading RG1 5HL
