12/05/2012 to 03/06/2012 CONTEXT - AN EXHIBITION OF PAINTINGS BY CHRIS STEVENS

READING-based art organisations, roves and roams and Jelly, are working together to produce "Context", a town-wide exhibition of work by Chris Stevens. The London artist, who graduated from Reading University in 1978, has since exhibited internationally and was awarded the BP Portrait Award from the National Portrait Gallery in the ‘90’s. Stevens says of his work: “I always use figures in my paintings. I use them to challenge the preconceptions we have about people due to media stereotyping. The paintings are concerned with identity, class, race, gender and the environment. This narrative is an essential element in my work”. The notion behind Context is to support the use of alternative creative space in order to reach new audiences and reconceptualise the ways we experience public art. Between Saturday 12th May and Saturday 3rd June, the paintings will be on show at various spots around Reading town centre with locations including windows in Broad Street Mall and the Oracle.

07/06/2012 to 08/06/2012 'ALLO, 'ALLO

We all remember this fantastic sitcom that ran for 10 years back in the 80s and 90s, following the unfortunate life of Rene Artois, a cafe owner in France stuck in the midst of chaos during World War 2. The characters are unforgettable - the sex-crazed waitresses, the English secret agent with the dreadful French accent, the Nazi Lieutenant with his litte tank and his crush on Rene, the nasty and kinky Herr Flick of the Gestapo and many more. The story of the play is written by the same writers and contains the infamous Fallen Madonna with the big boobies hidden inside the great big sausage. The double entendres come thick and fast and there's barely a second without a ridiculous joke. Not only does the evening include this classic family show but also a delectable dinner of fantastic French cuisine. Tickets for the show are £15 each the French Buffet is £12.

08/06/2012 AMÉLIE - AN OPEN AIR SHOWING (CANCELLED DUE TO WEATHER)

Is it enough to simply watch a film to escape to another world and to come back feeling just a tad warmer? We think so.... Perhaps the most charming movie of all time, and fabulously French too. Amélie (Audrey Tautou) is a shy waitress working at a tiny Paris cafe. She dedicates herself to helping others find happiness ... in the most delightfully unexpected way! But will she have the courage to do for herself what she has done for others? 16/06/2012 THE KING'S SINGERS - ROYAL RHYMES AND ROUNDS
 THE CONCERT HALL, READING

To mark the Diamond Jubilee of the reign of Queen Elizabeth II in 2012, The King’s Singers have created a lively programme of secular music from the reigns of some of the Queen’s more colourful forebears, Henry VIII, Elizabeth I and Victoria. Henry was a man of many parts, some more attractive than others. Amongst other accomplishments he was noted as a fine musician, and many musical works have been ascribed to him. Music played an important role in the courts of all 16th Century English monarchs, and musical puzzles and rounds were very popular during the reign of Henry’s daughter, Queen Elizabeth I.

17/06/2012 to 23/06/2012 READING BIKE WEEK

Reading Cycle Campaign was formed late 1982, the group was originally called Reading Cycling Action Group. Founding members were John Booth, Simon Watkins, Steve Thames and John Rigby. We have the County Surveyor and Simon Watkins to thank for the Campaign's take-off. The former launched his plan to complete the Inner Distribution Road and there were no obvious, signs of any provision for cyclists. We all thought this was terrible, but it was Simon who argued that it was time to hit the streets. We gave notice of a demo to be held on 25 June 1983 with a ride around part of the proposed IDR and a symbolic push up the Station Road bus lane (made legally shared in 1987). People arrived in swarms and by the time we arrived in the town centre there were 100 cyclists. Bike Week comprises a variety of events to raise awareness of the benefits of cycling.

23/06/2012 POINO + TODDLERS + JUSTICE FOR DRAGONS
 SOUTH STREET ARTS CENTRE, READING

POINO are a supremely off-kilter and powerful rock band, fronted by the man who gave us GIDDY MOTORS. Mixing tempered skill with wild ignorance they spit out a rich clash of menace, ambiguity, and caustic bliss; at one moment thunderous and choking, the next disguising calm with anxious tension. TODDLERS are a spaceage garage skronk raggamuffin bass n drum duo. They are the doubledotdash!? house band. JUSTICE FOR DRAGONS are a stonkin' experimental guitar & drum duo. crazy riffs, bangin' drums and some serious skills.

24/06/2012 ENGLAND v ITALY - BIG-SCREEN TV AT DOGMA!
 DOGMA

Now it gets interesting! England, possibly against expectations, into the quarter finals of Euro 2012, and a teasing test against Italy. The treams appear to be very well-matched, so it could come down to who can produce a little bit of decisive magic - maybe Wayne Rooney for England or Mario Balotelli for Italy. Watch it in comfort on the screens at Dogma!

25/06/2012 to 28/06/2012 A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM - Queen Anne's Junior School Drama Production
 Queen Anne's School

Assuming we have nice weather, the performances will take place in exactly the same fairy tale setting within the grounds that this marvellous work was performed in nearly a century ago (1919). Head of History Mr Talbot’s book “The Scarlet Runners” tells us how Peggy Webster, who played Puck, went on to become a professional actress and that she hoped “to come back and see on the front lawn at QAS the very tree I climbed as Puck a hundred years ago”. We wonder if she’s watching us up there now somewhere in the sky. And, if she is, what will she make of the madness, mayhem and merriment that our girls get up to throughout our special production. One word of warning: keep an eye out for low-flying bread rolls towards the end of the show!

25/06/2012 THE QUEEN'S JUBILEE VISIT TO HENLEY

MANY events were held locally for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee, but people in the Thames Valley will have only one opportunity to see Her Majesty in person during her UK Jubilee Tour, and that's today (Monday) in Henley-on-Thames. Between March 8th and July 25th Her Majesty will have visited 50 towns, cities and counties, and her visit to Henley comes two days before the start of the annual Henley Royal Regatta. It is also the only place on the tour list within 40 miles of Reading. Rather bizarrely, neither Henley Town Council nor the official website of the Town Centre and Riversides, Henley-on-Thames

27/06/2012 to 01/07/2012 HENLEY ROYAL REGATTA

A TOTAL of 133 overseas crews have entered this year's Henley Royal Regatta - seven better than the previous best for the event. Amongst those, there are 21 overseas nations represented, with a total of 499 crews entered - 13 up on last year. The quality of the elite entries is slightly confused by the Olympics. All the crews who have qualified for the London games will be away at their respective training camps, but those who missed out - among them Americans, Danes, Norwegians and South Africans - will be at Henley. Joining them will be crews from Australia, Canada, New Zealand and Germany preparing for the World Under-23 Championships in Lithuania in mid-July. There are also lightweight crews from Italy and Holland preparing for the World Championships in Bulgaria in August. The quality of the crews wanting to enter the Remenham Cup, the top event for women’s eights, prompted an increase in the number of crews racing in the regatta from eight to 10. The event runs from Wednesday to Sunday.
