16/11/2018 to 24/12/2018 APRÈS - READING'S MOST POPULAR CHRISTMAS BAR AT STATION HILL

For the fourth year the outdoor ski lodge bar will be back in Reading over the festive period. Gunter, head ski instructor/chief cocktail tester, and his team will be serving Mulled Wine, Frosty pints of Beer and their signature Winter Cocktails. Two years ago the bar moved to Station Hill, a move that WePop, the company behind the Après Bar, were extremely excited about. Their excitement was well-founded! A huge attraction to the Après Bar is their cosy mini chalets. Each one seats up to 10 people and is decorated with festive décor and blankets - and this year there’s a larger chalet as well, along with a marquee area with heaters. It’s a great spot to stop by for a swift drink during the festive period and it is also perfect for Christmas Parties. From reserving a small seated area or a chalet for a group, to hiring a section of the venue for your entire company.

23/11/2018 to 23/02/2019 GUYS AND DOLLS
 THE MILL AT SONNING

Following on from last year's hugely successful production of MY FAIR LADY, The Mill is delighted to continue its presentation of big classic musicals for Christmas. The talented team behind MY FAIR LADY, Director/Choreographer JOSEPH PITCHER and Musical Arranger/Supervisor/Conductor CHARLIE INGLES will work their magic once again on GUYS & DOLLS - one of the greatest musicals of time. This timeless New York Tale of gamblers, petty crooks, nightclub singers, as well as strait-laced missionaries, will delight and beguile you. Sky Masterson is the cool doyen of gamblers. His friend, the not quite down and out Nathan Detroit, makes a bet with him that he can’t get the pious and beautiful mission-doll, Sarah Brown, to go on a date with him to disreputable Havana. The Dice are rolled as these colourful characters pursue love and luck from the heart of Time’s Square to the sizzling clubs of Cuba. Will Lady Luck be on their side?

05/12/2018 to 15/12/2018 A CHORUS OF DISAPPROVAL - BY ALAN AYCKOURN
 WOKINGHAM THEATRE

A diffident widower attempts to escape loneliness by joining the local amateur light operatic society. By accident rather than by design (in fact, by not saying 'no' to anything be it a request to obtain confidential information from his company or an offer of illicit sex) he advances from a small part to the lead. Parallels are skillfully drawn between The Beggar's Opera and the day to day activities of the society which is performing it.

06/12/2018 to 09/12/2018 THE ALDERMASTON YORK NATIVITY PLAY

The village of Aldermaston has put on a Nativity Play in the parish church of St Mary the Virgin every year since 1957. The play is an adaptation of 8 or 9 plays from the 400 year old York Mystery Cycle plays that tell the story of the first Christmas. The Aldermaston staging of the York Nativity Play was the brainchild of Revd Canon Stanley Young, the vicar of Aldermaston, and Pat Eastop, a local mother and teacher who had studied Medieval Art. Pat went on to direct the play for 57 consecutive years before her death in 2014. She was awarded an MBE.

 WALLINGFORD CORN EXCHANGE

Welsh stand-up Robin Morgan is about to go on his first UK tour. One small issue: he’s only just got married, and is spending his actual honeymoon performing to the nation. Surely there’s a good reason why he’s doing it? There is. You’ll just have to come and find out. Fresh from two sell-out runs at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the writer for BBC’s Have I Got News For You and The Now Show will perform both critically acclaimed shows, back-to-back. In addition to his solo shows and work as a writer, Robin is the support artist for Ellie Taylor’s national tours and BBC1’s The Graham Norton Show, with television credits from BBC Three and Comedy Central to his name.

08/12/2018 to 09/12/2018 SOUTH CHILTERN CHORAL SOCIETY CHRISTMAS CONCERT

One of the joys of Christmas is to listen to (and sing along with) Christmas songs and carols. So, with that in mind, the South Chiltern Choral Society (SCCS) are delighted to invite you to a musical celebration of the Christmas story, when they will be performing Shawn Kirchner’s Behold New Joy and Bob Chilcott’s On Christmas Night. The former weaves together a modern medley of well-known carols from medieval times; the latter follows the sequence of the Christmas story using several familiar carol melodies within Chilcott’s own settings.

 WALLINGFORD CORN EXCHANGE

A new play by Rebekah King performed by Oxford-based theatre company Thistledown Theatre. Performances are in the Club Room – upstairs venue, not suitable for people with mobility problems. It’s 1642. Parliament has declared war on the King. Hester Cavill and her husband have sided with opposing armies: she a royalist, he a parliamentarian. When Sir Arthur is away, Hester refuses aid to a regiment of Cromwell’s troops who have turned up at her estate expecting Sir Arthur’s support. What Hester has not predicted, is that these troops have a strong-willed female leader of their own.

09/12/2018 READING BIKERS CHARITY TOY RUN 2018

When the event was launched 33 years ago, only 18 riders took part. This year around 1,500 bikers from all over the country are expected to take part in what is officially the world’s biggest motorcycle charity toy run. Every rider will carry a toy which is donated to Barnardo’s and other children’s charities over Christmas. Last year’s event was cancelled due to wintry conditions – an unexpected snowfall – so the bikers are looking forward to getting back in the saddle. Some roads will be closed briefly, with diversions in place. Roads most affected are Whitley Wood Lane, Lower Earley Way between The Black Boy Roundabout and The Showcase cinema. On from there it will be the A329 Reading Road between the Showcase and Shute End and Rectory Road and Wiltshire Road to Barnardo's High Close School in Wokingham.
1pm meet at John Wood PLC, RG2 9FW, (Formerly AMEC Foster Wheeler, formerly Shire Hall), near to J 11 M4.

09/12/2018 to 13/12/2018 A SPLASH OF COLOUR PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION

We are not alone in our ability to view the world in colour. Many species of birds, fish, reptiles, and amphibians have superior colour vision. Yet our ability to be enchanted by colours which illuminate complex patterns, lines and shapes is probably a uniquely human quality. Of all our senses, perhaps our sight is the most precious. Through our colour vision we understand our world. It warns us of danger, makes objects quickly recognisable, and helps us to store and retrieve precious memories. From the earliest cave paintings we have learned to express our feelings and share our thoughts with each other through colour. Open 10am to 3pm.

27/12/2018 to 12/01/2019 PATRONS AND DONORS - READING'S ART AND HOW IT GOT HERE

In 1885 crowd-sourcing existed in Reading: 5000 people contributed to the cost of having a portrait of biscuit magnate William Isaac Palmer painted for the town. And remarkably in the 1970s Reading commissioned a modern set of Civic silver with the support of dozens of local businesses. When Palmer went on to bequeath his personal collection of contemporary Victorian art, he started the impressive art collection at Reading Museum and set a precedent for later generations of gifts from Reading people. Today the museum remains unusual as its art collection continues to grow through the support of Reading Foundation for Art, grant-giving bodies and many individuals. See familiar favourites and unexpected treasures, some with curious stories attached.

03/01/2019 LIGHT IN THE LENS PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITION

As photographers we use light in our pictures to bring out the character in portraits, the grain and texture in surfaces, and to concentrate our gaze within the frame. We pick a particular moment in time to grasp the ever-changing light and capture a unique visual record. This exhibition includes images from the widest range of subjects, which we hope will add to the exhibition’s appeal. What all these photographs have in common is the way in which the light has transformed each image so that it becomes dramatic and special. Open daily 10am to 3pm. This is a touring exhibition created and supported by The Photographic Angle.
