01/11/2018 to 31/01/2019 BASILDON PARK ILLUMINATED WOODLAND WALK
 BASILDON PARK (NATIONAL TRUST)

As Autumn sets in at Basildon Park, the woodland really comes to life. The stunning display of Autumn colour on the trees is being further enhanced by an illuminated woodland display, which will last until January this year so you can enjoy the illuminated woodland walk throughout the winter as well. We've added hundreds more lights this year, so it's set to be extra special. NOTES: Wear sturdy shoes for walking through the woods. Uneven ground surface through the woodland, with steps up onto the path. The woodland walk can be found a short walk beyond the Stableyard. Dogs on leads welcome.

16/11/2018 to 24/12/2018 APRÈS - READING'S MOST POPULAR CHRISTMAS BAR AT STATION HILL

For the fourth year the outdoor ski lodge bar will be back in Reading over the festive period. Gunter, head ski instructor/chief cocktail tester, and his team will be serving Mulled Wine, Frosty pints of Beer and their signature Winter Cocktails. Two years ago the bar moved to Station Hill, a move that WePop, the company behind the Après Bar, were extremely excited about. Their excitement was well-founded! A huge attraction to the Après Bar is their cosy mini chalets. Each one seats up to 10 people and is decorated with festive décor and blankets - and this year there’s a larger chalet as well, along with a marquee area with heaters. It’s a great spot to stop by for a swift drink during the festive period and it is also perfect for Christmas Parties. From reserving a small seated area or a chalet for a group, to hiring a section of the venue for your entire company.

23/11/2018 to 23/02/2019 GUYS AND DOLLS
 THE MILL AT SONNING

Following on from last year's hugely successful production of MY FAIR LADY, The Mill is delighted to continue its presentation of big classic musicals for Christmas. The talented team behind MY FAIR LADY, Director/Choreographer JOSEPH PITCHER and Musical Arranger/Supervisor/Conductor CHARLIE INGLES will work their magic once again on GUYS & DOLLS - one of the greatest musicals of time. This timeless New York Tale of gamblers, petty crooks, nightclub singers, as well as strait-laced missionaries, will delight and beguile you. Sky Masterson is the cool doyen of gamblers. His friend, the not quite down and out Nathan Detroit, makes a bet with him that he can’t get the pious and beautiful mission-doll, Sarah Brown, to go on a date with him to disreputable Havana. The Dice are rolled as these colourful characters pursue love and luck from the heart of Time’s Square to the sizzling clubs of Cuba. Will Lady Luck be on their side?

30/11/2018 to 12/01/2019 PATRONS AND DONORS - READING'S ART AND HOW IT GOT HERE

In 1885 crowd-sourcing existed in Reading: 5000 people contributed to the cost of having a portrait of biscuit magnate William Isaac Palmer painted for the town. And remarkably in the 1970s Reading commissioned a modern set of Civic silver with the support of dozens of local businesses. When Palmer went on to bequeath his personal collection of contemporary Victorian art, he started the impressive art collection at Reading Museum and set a precedent for later generations of gifts from Reading people. Today the museum remains unusual as its art collection continues to grow through the support of Reading Foundation for Art, grant-giving bodies and many individuals. See familiar favourites and unexpected treasures, some with curious stories attached.

 KENTON THEATRE, HENLEY-ON-THAMES

Presented by Henley Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society (HAODS). With music and lyrics by Irving Berlin and based on the Paramount Pictures film, written for the screen by Norman Krasna, Norman Panama and Melvin Frank, this heartwarming musical adaptation features seventeen Irving Berlin songs. Veterans Bob Wallace and Phil Davis have a successful song-and-dance act after World War II. With romance in mind, the two follow a duo of beautiful singing sisters en route to their Christmas show at a Vermont lodge, which just happens to be owned by Bob and Phil’s former army commander. The dazzling score features well known standards including Blue Skies, I Love A Piano, How Deep Is the Ocean and the perennial favourite, White Christmas.

 WOKINGHAM THEATRE

A diffident widower attempts to escape loneliness by joining the local amateur light operatic society. By accident rather than by design (in fact, by not saying 'no' to anything be it a request to obtain confidential information from his company or an offer of illicit sex) he advances from a small part to the lead. Parallels are skillfully drawn between The Beggar's Opera and the day to day activities of the society which is performing it.

The village of Aldermaston has put on a Nativity Play in the parish church of St Mary the Virgin every year since 1957. The play is an adaptation of 8 or 9 plays from the 400 year old York Mystery Cycle plays that tell the story of the first Christmas. The Aldermaston staging of the York Nativity Play was the brainchild of Revd Canon Stanley Young, the vicar of Aldermaston, and Pat Eastop, a local mother and teacher who had studied Medieval Art. Pat went on to direct the play for 57 consecutive years before her death in 2014. She was awarded an MBE.

Last year’s event was cancelled due to wintry conditions – an unexpected snowfall – so the bikers are looking forward to getting back in the saddle. Some roads will be closed briefly, with diversions in place. Roads most affected are Whitley Wood Lane, Lower Earley Way between The Black Boy Roundabout and The Showcase cinema. On from there it will be the A329 Reading Road between the Showcase and Shute End and Rectory Road and Wiltshire Road to Barnardo's High Close School in Wokingham.

09/12/2018 to 13/12/2018 A SPLASH OF COLOUR PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION

We are not alone in our ability to view the world in colour. Many species of birds, fish, reptiles, and amphibians have superior colour vision. Yet our ability to be enchanted by colours which illuminate complex patterns, lines and shapes is probably a uniquely human quality. Of all our senses, perhaps our sight is the most precious. Through our colour vision we understand our world. It warns us of danger, makes objects quickly recognisable, and helps us to store and retrieve precious memories. From the earliest cave paintings we have learned to express our feelings and share our thoughts with each other through colour. Open 10am to 3pm.

12/12/2018 THE BICYCLE IN WARTIME - TALK, AT WEST BERKS MUSEUM
 WEST BERKSHIRE MUSEUM

This talk by Tony Hadland traces the use of the bicycle for military purposes, starting as early as 1817. The story takes us many places, including the USA, Europe and Vietnam, and spans more than 140 years. Along the way, we see how Raleigh became a massive maker of munitions in both world wars, bringing huge financial rewards to captains of industry and revolutionising the lives of the many women who worked as machinists on the shop floor. Tony Hadland is a local historian, co-author of MIT Press's Bicycle Design: an illustrated history, and consultant for the BBC4 film Peddling Dreams.

14/12/2018 COMEDY AT THE KENTON
 KENTON THEATRE, HENLEY-ON-THAMES

Oh my aching sides. I should probably see a doctor. You, on the other hand, should come to The Kenton for some top flight comedy. Jack Barry is probably the only stand up on the circuit with a degree in Chinese. What a waste. Jack first appeared at the Edinburgh Festival as part of critically acclaimed student sketch group Leeds Tealights, named Best Student Sketch Group in 2010. Since then he has performed as part of the Pleasance Comedy Reserve and in doubleheader Your New Mild Friends. Manchester comedian and former regular contributor to XFM’s breakfast show, Hayley Ellis has gone from strength to strength since she began performing. A regular MC at gigs around the country, Hayley’s natural warmth and charm make her impossible to dislike. Jacob Hawley is one of the boldest new voices on the circuit, and is beginning to build a following after reaching the finals of the BBC New Comedy Award 2017. He has a self-aware, conversational style and delivers a hilariously introspective social commentary based on his small town suburban upbringing.

20/12/2018 CHRISTMAS AT THE KENTON
 KENTON THEATRE, HENLEY-ON-THAMES

Join us in the build up to Christmas with an evening of multiple musical delights. This year we welcome Pure Fluke, an evolution of the Ukulele Only approach that has now grown into a multi-instrument folk-style band playing vintage and modern tunes but still with a unique Ukulele slant.  Their eclectic set ranges from 1930s ballads, jive, rock, ska right up to the present day. Award winning singer-songwriter Megan Henwood grew up in Henley On Thames, and she returns in support of her latest album “River” which draws on her experiences of living by the Thames. Her take on folk often includes Jazz and Electronica influences and whilst she’s often described as Oxford’s Laura Marling, she most definitely has a voice all her own. Amazing Jazz Singer BB Kean and her band are joined by special guest Purdy for a couple of numbers….

22/12/2018 ROYALS v MIDDLESBROUGH - SKY BET CHAMPIONSHIP

Reading's home form this season has been generally miserable, and they will be hard-pushed to improve it in the last match before Christmas at the Mad Stad. Middlesbrough have been strongly fancied as promotion contenders all season - and will be strongly fancied to win this one, because they are certainly in the promotion mix.
