27/12/2018 to 12/01/2019 PATRONS AND DONORS - READING'S ART AND HOW IT GOT HERE

In 1885 crowd-sourcing existed in Reading: 5000 people contributed to the cost of having a portrait of biscuit magnate William Isaac Palmer painted for the town. And remarkably in the 1970s Reading commissioned a modern set of Civic silver with the support of dozens of local businesses. When Palmer went on to bequeath his personal collection of contemporary Victorian art, he started the impressive art collection at Reading Museum and set a precedent for later generations of gifts from Reading people. Today the museum remains unusual as its art collection continues to grow through the support of Reading Foundation for Art, grant-giving bodies and many individuals. See familiar favourites and unexpected treasures, some with curious stories attached.

10/01/2019 to 22/01/2019 CURVILINEAR - PHOTOGRAPHY AND CERAMICS EXHIBITION

Curvilinear brings together hand-built ceramics by Sally Dorrity and contemporary photography by Tracy Florance. Tracy has travelled widely, and takes her camera with her wherever she goes, hoping to capture the essence of the places she visits. She is drawn to interior and external architecture, in which she attempts to capture patterns and shapes that others might miss. Sally works in stoneware clay to hand-build her pots. Her ceramics and skills are continually evolving and progressing, as she pursues her fascination with form and texture. Sally’s ceramics and Tracy’s photographs complement each other perfectly, with Sally’s glazes and Tracy’s images of reflections in glass and water often echoing each other in form and colour.

01/02/2019 to 14/07/2019 AN EARTHLY PARADISE - WILLIAM MORRIS AND THE THAMES

This new exhibition illustrates the rich and little-known story of William Morris’ deep connections to the Thames. We bring together a unique selection of works, with loans from the V&A, The William Morris Gallery, British Library, and many more. Highlights include Morris’ Thames series of textiles alongside his original hand-drawn designs, a signed copy of News from Nowhere, and his personal fishing tackle and spectacles. Materials from the Morris & Co. workshop illustrate the production process, while socialist pamphlets that Morris penned and published demonstrate his deep commitment to socialism in later life. The influence of the Thames and its tributaries flowed through William Morris’ life and work. The river provided the setting for his leisure time spent angling and boating, inspiration for his designs and writing, and the ideal water conditions for the manufacture of his textiles. One notable Thames boat trip from his London home via Henley to his rural retreat in Oxfordshire was so moving that it inspired his socialist utopia novel, News from Nowhere.

06/02/2019 to 10/02/2019 PERFORMANCE PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION

Performance was conceived early in 2012 as British excitement grew in anticipation of hosting the Olympics. Local sporting events were photographed as communities played their part in preparing for the Games. Other photographers concentrated on artistic events, from dance and theatre to street performance and music. Performance is an exciting and often adrenaline-filled genre of photography as dynamic action shots can be some of the most challenging to take. This exhibition highlights the transitory nature of action-orientated photography. PERFORMANCE is a touring photographic exhibition created and supported by The Photographic Angle. Please check website prior to attendance for latest information as dates may be subject to change. Disabled visitors are advised to check with us before visiting an exhibition so that suitable access can be provided. PLEASE NOTE: Visitors to this exhibition can view images at both 3 Forbury Place, and Abbey Gardens, which are just a short walk away from each other. Open 10am – 3pm Daily, Free Admission.
