29/01/2020 to 15/02/2020 ONE MILLION TINY PLAYS ABOUT BRITAIN
THE WATERMILL - WEST BERKSHIRE PLAYHOUSE, NEWBURY

A couple peer into an estate agent’s window; two sports fans have a heart-to-heart in the loo; a daughter has questions about her mother’s love life; and as a father helps his son tie his football boots, he realises they are growing apart. If you keep your eyes and ears open, there are a million tiny plays happening every day. Laugh-out-loud funny and sometimes heartbreakingly moving, overheard conversations from across the country form Craig Taylor’s humorous and poignant look at modern Britain. Originally published in The Guardian, these miniature insights into other people’s lives reveal the triumphs, disasters, horrors and joys of life in the twenty-first century.

05/02/2020 to 09/12/2020 A SPLASH OF COLOUR PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION

We are not alone in our ability to view the world in colour. Many species of birds, fish, reptiles, and amphibians have superior colour vision. Yet our ability to be enchanted by colours which illuminate complex patterns, lines and shapes is probably a uniquely human quality. Of all our senses, perhaps our sight is the most precious. Through our colour vision we understand our world. It warns us of danger, makes objects quickly recognisable, and helps us to store and retrieve precious memories. From the earliest cave paintings we have learned to express our feelings and share our thoughts with each other through colour. Open 10am to 3pm.

10/02/2020 to 15/02/2020 THE LAST TEMPTATION OF BORIS JOHNSON
 THEATRE ROYAL, WINDSOR

The smash hit play that sold out its London run comes to Windsor as part of a UK tour. It was the dinner that changed history: the night in February 2016 when Boris Johnson decided to vote ‘leave’ and a nation’s future was sealed. Guests included the spirits of Prime Ministers past including Margaret Thatcher, Winston Churchill and Tony Blair as well as fellow MP Michael Gove, the journalist Sarah Vine, Marina Wheeler and Evgeny Lebedev. Fast forward to post-Brexit Britain, 2029. For reasons that may be fact and/or fiction at the time of the performance, Boris, no longer in power, roams the political wilderness. Unexpected events see him back in the spotlight and with a chance to make Britain great again.

14/02/2020 ICELAND SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
 ANVIL ARTS, BASINGSTOKE

Bizet’s incidental music to L’Arlesienne was not successful at the time but has become one of his most popular works. Ravel’s concerto shows the composer responding to the constraints of using only one hand on the piano with imaginative orchestral colouring and rhythmic subtlety. After a short but striking piece from one of Iceland’s foremost composers, the concert ends with an extended selection from Prokofiev’s vividly characterised music for Romeo and Juliet.

20/02/2020 BOURNEMOUTH SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
 ANVIL ARTS, BASINGSTOKE

Symphony no. 102, written for Haydn’s second visit to London, is one of the finest of all his symphonies. Its four movements include a deeply felt adagio and a high-spirited finale based on a Croatian folk tune. Mendelssohn’s piano concerto shows many of his strengths, as a dramatic first movement gives way to a lyrical and tender slow section. The finale is a tour de force of elegant, fleet-fingered virtuosity. Schubert’s symphony is one of the most melodic and genial pieces that he ever wrote. The four movements are perfectly proportioned and full of delightful music.

21/02/2020 COUNT ARTHUR STRONG - IS THERE ANYBODY OUT THERE?
 THE HEXAGON THEATRE, READING

As well as being the all-round entertainer we all know and love from the telly, Count Arthur Strong is also a lifelong fan of astronomy, since having been given a microscope, or whatever it is they use, for Christmas when he was a small precocious baby. In fact, it’s said the first word he spoke was ‘Uranus’. In this, his brand-new show, he seamlessly combines the very best showbiz entertainment you’ll currently find, in the world, possibly? as he wrestles with some of the big questions that other all-round entertainers shy away from.

 THE MILL AT SONNING

Greg only met Ginny a month ago but has already made up his mind that she’s the girl for him. When she tells him that she’s going to visit her parents, he decides this is the moment to ask her father for his daughter’s hand. Discovering a scribbled address, he follows her to Buckinghamshire where he finds Philip and Sheila enjoying a peaceful Sunday morning breakfast in the garden, but the only thing is – they’re not Ginny’s parents. Mistaken identities and cross purposes that click and fizz to the end, guarantees two hours of continuous laughter. Beautifully crafted, wonderfully funny and charmingly English, RELATIVELY SPEAKING was Alan Ayckbourn‘s first great West End success and turned him into a household name.

27/02/2020 READING FC FORMER PLAYERS - EVENING WITH STEVE COPPELL

Steve Coppell became a household name in his playing days. After beginning his career with Tranmere Rovers in 1973, he spent eight years with Manchester United where he made 322 appearances, scoring 53 goals. He went on to represent his country, playing for England 42 times over 6 years from 1977 and scoring 7 times. However, it was as a manager that Coppell will be instantly and fondly remembered by Reading fans. Steve could well be considered the most successful manager in the history of Reading Football Club. That is a dramatic statement, but well earnt after Steve took the Royals into the top tier of English football for the first time in club history in 2006. The Royals accumulated a record breaking 106 points in the process, ending the season with just two defeats. That record still stands to this day as no football league club manager has been able to repeat Coppell's remarkable feat. As a result, Coppell was voted manager of the season by the League Managers Association. Coppell received the award again the following season after guiding Reading to an unexpected eighth placed finish, the club's highest placing in their history, and narrowly missing out on European qualification. There are very few people with such an outstanding record as both a player and manager and he is sure to provide a fascinating insight to Reading fans on 27 February. This is a great opportunity to meet, and put your questions to, the man behind Reading's most successful spell of all time. The event seems certain to sell out, so please book early online on our events page. The evening will be hosted by former Royals defender, now BBC Berkshire sports presenter, Ady Williams.

Three-time Edinburgh Comedy Award nominee and very-hard-to-pin-down-indie-underdog-nightmare Josie Long is back with a brand new show after a brief hiatus, during which she had a baby and so on. The aim is for you to come out of it feeling optimistic about the future, although that is a big ask. At the very least there will be some really silly voices in it, and that’s not nothing.
