BREAKING NEWS: LINKS TO THE TOP LOCAL SOURCES - AND READING USA
29/12/2012 WITH traditional newspapers under increasing pressure from "new media", both of the local newspapers, the Post and the Chronicle have made dramatic changes in recent years. The end of 2014 brought the "last Post" - after nearly 50 years, the old Evening Post adjusted to a twice-weekly, Wednesday and Friday offering, and now is only a website.

It also changed owners, from Guardian Media Group to Trinity Mirror - who a few years ago owned the Reading Chronicle, which was next owned by Clyde and Forth Press, and is now under the wing of Newsquest! And in mid-summer 2015 the print element of the Post and getreading disappeared completely.

GETREADING WEBSITE: After nearly 50 years, the old Reading Evening Post has gone full circle from six-nights evening paper to five nights, then one midweek edition plus the Friday giveaway "getreading". That was also the title of the website, which is now the company's only outlet after owners Trinity Mirror pulled the plug on the print titles.

THE READING CHRONICLE: Now the only print paper in town - and also updates its local news and sports a lot more frequently than before, also carrying news from local areas covered by other "Berkshire Media Group" publications...

BBC RADIO BERKSHIRE: Its radio output is well-established and its followers are comfortable with what they hear. The website, however, covering the whole county, is not as good as it should be considering that we taxpayers fund it! It has news, sport, traffic news, weather, and access to all the other massive resources of the BBC...

MERIDIAN TV: Hardly made an effort with their area website in the old days, but now, having abandoned a brief existence as ITV Local/Thames Valley, the "new-old new-again" Meridian has finally re-launched its website in a meaningful way... Check it out, and view the grins of the rather unlikely, but loveable, duo of Fred and Reading's own Sangeeta Bhabra.

THE HENLEY STANDARD: Top notch, especially if you live north of the river, where it includes Caversham and Peppard news. Unusually in this day and age, it's privately and independently run and makes a big effort with its website.

THE NEWBURY WEEKLY NEWS: Now edited by former Reading Post guiding light Andy Murrell - a shrewd appointment. The NWN has plenty to offer, particularly If you live on the west side of Reading town, and, bizarrely, come under Newbury/West Berkshire for your council services. Their comprehensive and well-designed website is an award winner.

JACK FM READING: Original owners, including Sir John Madejski, won the licence to provide a Reading "community" station. The folksy "community" angle has now gone out of the window, with SJM selling it on to the quirky nationwide Jack FM group.

READING BOROUGH COUNCIL: RBC now has a revamped site which is still not over user-friendly, but it's interesting to keep up with the council's view of local topics. Comprehensive, but not always snappy or timely with its "news" content.

THAMES VALLEY POLICE: Now with an upgraded website, but it's still not a riveting read, and occasionally tech gremlins stop it working. Check out the media news releases, although despite plenty of potential content, the Reading area does not feature strongly in that section.

NEWSNOW (Reading stories): A national site, which, unlike some internet offerings, was conceived and built by journalists. It trawls the www for any story it finds with the word "Reading", so it can occasionally, therefore throw up book-reading topics, or Reading USA - but it's a good source of interesting items.

Not forgetting our cousins in Reading USA...

READING EAGLE: Reading, Pennsylvania is the "outlet store" capital of the States. If you want to keep up with all that's happening in our town's namesake - and others, see below - fly with the Eagle!

READING (USA) PROPERTY: If, like many people, you think the UK is going to hell in a financial handcart (which looks a good odds-on bet after the 2015 election!) and fancy moving to the States, then check out the local property prices in Reading, Penn.

READING MASSACHUSETTS ADVOCATE: And if, as is highly-likely, you did not know there is also Reading, Massachusetts, well it's 16 miles north of Boston city centre and has a population of 23,708. This is their community newspaper website.

READING VERMONT: There's also a Reading in Vermont, whose history refers to "the market town of the same name by the Thames in England".
